NEW YORK DEMOCRAT CONGRESSWOMAN CAROLYN MALONEY APOLOGIZES FOR USING

'N WORD'

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Carolyn Maloney issued a statement yesterday apologizing for using the "N word" when she was telling a story attacking Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

"I apologize for having repeated a word I find disgusting," said Maloney, who may challenge Gillibrand in the Democratic primary next year.

Maloney was quoted in a "City Hall News" story recounting a previous conversation she had about Gillibrand.

Maloney said she heard from someone that Gillibrand was pushing English-only education while she was in Puerto Rico and the congresswoman added that the person told her that was "was like saying n--r to a Puerto Rican,'" according to City Hall News.

Asked if the congresswoman was quoted accurately, Maloney's campaign released her comment explaining how she said it happened.

"It's no excuse, but I was so caught up in relaying the story exactly as it was told to me that, in doing so, I repeated a word that should never be repeated," Maloney said.
